LAND ACKNOWLDEGMENT STATEMENT

Take Notice would like to recognize the voices that are so often unheard. Land Acknowledgement Statements are an important part of honoring those whose land we now live and work on. We begin each episode with a Land Acknowledgement to spark ideas and keep these conversations in the front of our minds, so that we may learn how to do better. We would like to acknowledge the land on which these episodes are created. We would like to show gratitude to the traditional, ancestral land of the Shoalwater Bay, Chinook, and Coast Salish people, including the Duwamish People past and present. Recognizing that these names are not the original names of the people of these areas. As we continue to learn how to better acknowledge Native people of these lands, we will adjust the wording of this statement. We encourage our listeners to research the land on which you live and listen. Recognizing this is just the beginning.

About Take Notice

Here to Listen. To Take Notice.

‘Take Notice: Amplifying Black Stories’ was created with the intent to connect, provide resources, and inspire personal growth. I grew up in predominantly rural and suburban areas of Western Washington and it wasn’t until I had the opportunity to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, where I participated in conversations around Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, that I began to learn how much I didn’t know about the lived experiences of people of color. I began to understand the meaning of privilege, and that the reality of privilege for some was not the same for others.

My education on these topics began to deepen a few years later when I met my husband, a Black man raised in South Seattle. We had conversations about the many times he was mistreated in school and harassed by authorities because of the color of his skin. We have had countless talks about the issues surrounding his experiences and our shared experiences as an interracial couple. I soon began to seek out ways to educate myself further. Once you see, you cannot unsee.

Eventually, I got curious about the impact the conversations between my husband and I could have for others. The potential for change can come from just one person’s story, whether it's a shared experience or unfamiliar. The idea of a podcast came to mind. The pandemic created the space to get started while the murder of George Floyd and ensuing marches and demonstrations held the inspiration to take action.

‘Take Notice: Amplifying Black Stories’ began in October 2020 after months of learning about podcasting and conversations on how to approach the project. Our first season shared personal stories from thirteen guests from around North America. Now in its second season, Take Notice is continually evolving by listening to feedback and searching for ways that the podcast can be more inclusive, reach more listeners, and build community.
